DIY Flower Crowns

Having some fun with flower crowns while lighting the candles on Nicole's 30th birthday cake!
Having fun wearing flower crowns while lighting the candles on Nicole’s 30th birthday cake!

Is it me or is everybody suddenly wearing flower crowns on their heads? Its a Summer trend I absolutely love and as much as I adore flower crowns made with real flowers, I thought it would be a bit more practical and a fun keepsake to use crepe paper to make the flowers for the crowns we wore at Nicole’s 30th Birthday Party.

I started with a bunch of supplies after an inspirational trip to one of my fave stores in NYC- Paper Presentation.

I bought the Martha Stewart Crafts flower kit to start me off in my flower making. It includes supplies (floral wire, tissue paper, foam orbs, pre made paper leaves) and instructions. The included pre-cut sheets of tissue paper were a great way to get started and refresh my memory on how to make paper pom pom flowers.

For the pom pom flower, begin with a lyered square of tissue paper. I layered 6 sheets. Fold like an accordian then trim the triangle edges. Wrap tight with floral wire then carefully pull up the tissue paper and separate it layer by layer.

To make a contrasting center, add tissue paper in another color at the top of your stack.

I loved the leave included in the kit. The pom pom style flowers were easy but I never did figure out these ones with the petals.

There’s also lots of DIY inspiration on making paper flowers on line. Some are great and super detailed. Check out our Flower Crown Pinterest board for more details and lots of inspiration. In addition to the Martha kit I bought magenta pink crepe paper (sold in a pack like tissue paper) and a roll of green streamers (also crepe paper). I also bought headbands to use as a base.

I bought these inexpensive headbands in Shop Rite. They proved to be the perfect base for what I had in mind.

Once I got going on these I experimented with trimming the edges and cutting into them for a pom pom effect. Others I just left layery.

I needed more leaves so I cut a 3 inch piece of crepe paper from the streamer roll. I folded it in half and cut a leaf shape.

I wrapped the headbands with green pipecleaners. The pipecleners softened up the headband and were a great base to hot glue on to.

I used mixed greens from the pack I bought, but one color would be fine.

To pull it altogether, I wrapped the headband with the green crepe paper. This was an extra step I added since all my pipecleaners didn't match.

The green streamer layer really evened out the whole look and looked great with the leaves.

So pretty! I varied all the shapes and sizes of the flowers so each one was unique!

When we got to the restaurant, I had a moment of panic wondering if everyone would like them as much as I did and want to wear them…
But sure enough, I was as each girl discovered their crown on their plates, they and did not hesitate to put them on!

Summer may be half over, but I hope this inspires you to make a beautiful crepe paper Summer crown for yourself… especially since this one will last forever! I have the feeling we might be making some more versions of these in the future… Life is Sweet! Xo Dani
