2012A Little Piece of Americana
Today we attended the Portsmouth Memorial Day day parade in Portsmouth, VA. A tradition since 1884, the City’s Memorial Day Parade is the nation’s oldest. Attending a “small town” parade is a bit like stepping into a Norman Rockwell painting- the crowds dressed in red, white and blue, waving flags, faces painted, applause and cheers for each and every vet and military group that passes… While we were waiting for the parade to start, a man in the crowd near us observed, “Well, isn’t this just a little piece of Americana?”. I couldn’t have put it better myself…
…And as the parade marched on I could not help but notice another hero who emerged. She was standing close up on the parade route, holding a home made sign, waving it with such passion! I don’t think she put it down once. While we were all there to say “Thank You”, this woman made sure the message was heard loud and clear.
Thank you “Sign Lady”, for really bringing the message home! For those who serve and have served, Thank You. You are our heroes! Xo Dani
