One thing I really miss about working full time on the Martha Stewart show is dressing up for work. As much as I love working for myself, let’s face it- there’s no one to dress up for in my studio other than Hope and Spot who seem to like me best in flannel pj’s anyway.
The Spring issues are out and I am so in LOVE with the bright color stories, huge platforms and flatforms (genius), and maxi dresses (I have been a fan of maxi dresses- or “muumuus” for years!)
In the spirit of Spring, I thought I’d share a template for how to decorate these “Fashion Wise” owls. I first created them for my friend, Javier, who hosted a fabulous Chanel inspired party a few months ago.
To create the Fashion Wise Owl Cookies:
• Owl cookies baked with the Sweet Dani B Lovebird cutter (LINK)
• White Royal Icing
• Black Royal Icing
• Black and White candy such as gumdrops, oversized gumdrops, m&m’s, champagne bubbles, jordan almonds, mini marshmallows, licorice wheels, jelly beans, rolled fondant cut into circles.
Using black royal icing, dam and flood the entire owl body. Even icing out with icing knife and pop air bubble with a toothpick. Add beak (cut champagne bubble or gumdrop) and eyeballs (fondant circles, oversized gumdrops cut in 1/2, licorice wheels).
While black icing is still wet add crosshatch lines in white icing going in both directions.
Add double necklaces using halved mini marshmallows, champagne bubbles, jelly beans, or candy beads. Add a red candy heart “charm”.
Add jelly beans or m&m’s at the bottom of the owl to mimic perching feet.
These owls are always in search of the next fashion trend so place each candy eyeball (m&m, candy bead, piped dot of icing) looking in the same direction- up, down, left or right.
